Hi, it’s Melissa again.
I’ve been posting recently about updates to the Quality Score algorithm. Looks like the quality of your ad is going to play an important role on your position from here on out. So how do you make your ad more relevant?
From Google’s perspective, ads that get people to click on them must be relevant to the search the person just typed in. Why else would they click on them? Since this is purely number driven (your CTR), you need to get your CTR higher.
Now is when you have to think like your customer. What ads would make them click? Here are some things to consider.
-Does your ad contain the same terms they are searching for? If they search for “country music” and you show them ads for “western music”, they may not connect the two. Speak their language.
-Do you offer something that would make them want to visit your page? Often, “Free shipping” claims do not offer the biggest pull. Why do they care about shipping when they haven’t decided to buy from you yet?
-Does your URL let them know what type of site you are taking them to? A generic URL can deter clicks because people do not think that your site will give them the search results they need. If you are searching for diamond jewelry and an ad comes up for a site named www.BobsStore.com, will you click that ad opposed to one for www.DiamondJewelryStore.com?
-An alternate way to increase your CTR is to get rid of keywords that are getting a lot of searches (impressions) and no clicks. These words are causing your CTR to go down and they seem to be proving themselves useless anyway.
Bob hopes to see you at the Info Summit in St. Louis. He says to look out for him and say hey!

Imagine my horror when I saw how Bob spelled Tae Kwon Do yesterday, "Tai Kwan Doe"? Are you kidding me? I’ll write my own subject lines the next 2 days!
You saw the post yesterday about the changes to Google’s Quality Score and how it treats CTR. Now the next change. Ever wonder why sometimes there are sponsored search results on the left, above the organic results? These are ads that meet a certain quality standard in Google’s eyes. Since they are in such a prominent place, Google places high importance on their quality, and less importance on their bids. But sometimes there are no ads there. So what gives?
In the previous algorithm, if the top ad (based on overall QS, including bid price) did not meet the quality standard for the premium position, no ads were shown. In the new method, an ad in position 2 that meets the quality standard can jump the ad in position 1 that does not meet the standard and be shown on the left while ad 1 is left on the right.
Looks like Google is really focusing in on ad quality. Do you know how to increase the quality of your ads? Look for more info in the next post.
